USTA New England set up a booth and mini court at the event promoting Net Generation, USTA’s new youth brand. The goal of Net Generation is to capture the imaginations of kids of all backgrounds and skill levels through a variety of programs, teaching and learning tools—bringing together a national community of parents, coaches, players, teachers, and volunteers.

“We were excited to bring Net Generation to the Stowe Mountain Lodge Classic this year. Nearly every child who attended the tournament played on our court and some were even lucky enough to play with Vasek Pospisil and Tommy Haas. We are happy to support this unique event and our official travel partner, Grand Slam Tennis Tours,” said Alex Wesley, USTA New England Marketing Director.

For the players participating in the Classic, these matches at the feet of Vermont’s most famous ski resort means an opportunity to warm up in a relaxing, quiet atmosphere, far removed from the din of Queens, N.Y., where upwards of 700,000 fans flock to the two-week event. For local tennis fans, it means a unique blend of intimacy and action, as the players get to show both their athletic prowess and their lighter side.

On Tuesday, the opening day of play, the two highest-ranked players in the tournament, Spaniard Albert Ramos Vinolas and American Jared Donaldson, stared down each other in the grueling midday sun and kept the other from gaining an inch. They brought their own heat, with punishing serves and returns that resulted in deuce after deuce, break point after break point.

“We’re trying to focus on providing the players an incredible experience with this intimate venue,” Gaines said. “We get to introduce them to a new population.”

“There is two different memories of tennis in this place,” explained Kyle Ross, the event’s tournament director. “If you’re 50 and over, you remember the ‘back in the day’ tournament in the 70s and 80s, with [Ivan] Lendl and those guys. If you’re 25 to 50, you remember the Fed Cup. It’s still in the collective memory here. And now we are trying to create new memories for new fans.”

The tournament is also expected to benefit the region economically. For the FedCup in 2007, 75 percent of tickets were sold in Vermont, while the Stowe Mountain Lodge Classic has sold over 50 percent out of state, according to Chmura.

“There’s going to be thousands of people traveling to Stowe and to Vermont to stay, eat and enjoy the last week of summer,” he said.

Ross, who works for Grand Slam Tennis Tours, said the experience for fans is unique. Tennis stars normally compete in front of tens of thousands of fans, in stadiums located in a “concrete jungle,” he said.

“It’s an intimate kind of event,” Ross said. “You’re sitting in your seats looking at the court and you have the trails of Stowe in the background.

The Waterbury Record's rundown on ballkids

“They literally keep the play moving,” Ross said of ball kids. “If ball kids weren’t there, no one would be able to get a ball. We’d have to wait for about 30 to 40 seconds in between every point. Balls would be scattered all over the place. No tournament can run effectively without ball kids.”

Ball kids retrieve balls, hand them to players to start the next point and do much more — fetch drinks, hold umbrellas for shade, offer players towels between points, and clean up the court after a match.

“I worked with ball kids for years. They’re crucial,” Ross said.

Mountain Times hosts a Q&A with Andrew Chmura

AL: What characteristics make Stowe a good place to host a tennis tournament?

AC: The community is ripe with athletic, active people that love sport. And it’s a bit different than the mainstream in that Vermont folks love their mountain biking, skiing, climbing, etc., and tennis falls in that category of an individual sport that you can play forever and actually improve as you age. The proof is in the hundreds of miles of single track found in Stowe, the best ski mountain in the East, and the 350-plus tennis courts in Stowe. That is about one tennis court for every 12 people! It’s a tennis town and deserving of a big tennis tournament each year.
